“A Cancer at the Core of Medicine”

Dr Goldacre classified the research publication methods as “A cancer in the core of medicine.” Your medical doctor is very likely to be misled when it comes to the information about the safety and efficacy of the prescription drugs that they are prescribing on a regular basis.  It doesn’t mean they are a bad doctor, it means they have bad data.  Please watch the short 13 minute video…

Here’s the direct link to the article associated with the video.

…I’ve said this for many years and I’ll continue to drive home this point no matter what names I am called as a result: Published research does not EVER trump what we know about basic human physiology (textbook physiology from sources such as Guyton’s Textbook of Medical Physiology). For example, if you know the biochemical pathway of a drug and how that pathway’s physiology will cause liver damage, but there is a published study in a prominent journal saying that the drug does not cause liver damage, then you have to assume that the study is wrong because the physiology says otherwise.

Let’s look a little more closely at what Dr Goldacre says about Tamiflu. Tamiflu is supposedly the drug of choice for mediating complications of the influenza virus. Let’s look at the facts. I am getting my facts from the FDA, CDC and DrugAlert (a smartphone application that compiles data from the FDA and CDC on drug facts, interactions & reported incidents). I’m looking at 2008-2009 because that seems to be the year with the most up to date statistics.

  • The CDC reports 133 deaths in 2009 from influenza.
  • In that same year, 796 reports of adverse reactions to Tamiflu were reported including:
    • 129 deaths
    • 41 life threatening
    • 165 hospitalizations
    • 18 disability
    • 1 birth defect
    • Many reports of neuropsychiatric events including: hallucination, insomnia, convulsion, delirium, depression, nightmares, anxiety, agitation & aggression

So what was the solution to the Tamiflu problem? Dr Goldacre rightly suggests that ALL studies need to be published, regardless of outcome.  But here’s what happened with Tamiflu.  You judge whether or not this sounds appropriate:

In 2011, the dosage was lowered from 12mg/ml to 6mg/ml. Do you think this will lower the number of adverse events? I would assume so. You can bet your life that these findings will be published and applauded by the media. However, if you cut the dose in half, what will that do to the efficacy of the drug? We have no idea because there are no studies showing the efficacy of Tamiflu at 1/2 the dose that was originally studied!  BUT, the drugs efficacy WILL continue to be reported at the 12 mg/ml dose even if they are not legally able to give that dose to patients. Do you feel cheated yet?

After all this, what are your options as you go into the flu season this year? Let me make a few suggestions based on known physiology (remember from above) & real statistics from the terrible outbreak of influenza in 1917 & 1918 where we lost many lives to complications from influenza.  I’m going to go ahead and link to a few article on the subjects and then highlight some interesting data:

Here are some interesting highlights:

  • Studies show that blood drawn from patients before and after spinal care IMMEDIATELY increases immunoglobulins AND CD4 T-Cells.
  • Spinal care decreases pro-inflammatory mediators (physiologically known to decrease immune function)
  • During the Spanish flu of 1918:
    • For every 10,000 cases of influenza treated medically, there were 950 deaths
    • For every 10,000 cases of influenza treated conservatively (drugless), there were 25 deaths
    • For every 10,000 cases of pneumonia (complication of influenza) treated medically, there were 6,400 deaths. That’s staggering – 64% of people died!
    • For every 10,000 cases of pneumonia treated conservatively, there were 100 deaths. Only 1%!
    • Perhaps the most interesting statistic: In Oklahoma, chiropractors were called in for 233 cases where the medical doctors had given up hope and counted the patient’s lives as lost. The chiropractors saved 208 of those patients.

So, what’s the take home message?  There are a number of things we can do to boost your immune system. At Upward Living Chiropractic Wellness, we believe that the best defense against seasonal flu is to boost your body’s natural immunity.  Nutrition, diet, exercise and spinal care are the best ways to do this. It’s all about prevention! We begin to reboot your body’s physiology from day 1 of your care plan.

As a disclaimer, it’s important to understand that doctors of chiropractic DO NOT treat influenza. We support health. It’s important to stay informed and monitor your symptoms in case you begin to show signs of life threatening complications. The most prominent of these signs would be hallucinations, delirium, convulsions, metal confusion or agitation, perhaps even seizures (associated with an extremely high temperature) or extreme neck pain which can be associated with meningitis (a life threatening infection in the spinal cord). If you think you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 9-1-1.

However, in the case that you feel yourself beginning to get sick, DO NOT cancel your appointment!  Furthermore, if you start to feel sick, DO NOT wait for your appointment! Call me and say, “Doctor, I think I’m getting sick. I need to get my spine checked right now.” I promise we will make every effort to accommodate you.

Health Tip: Managing Your Emotions

Stress physiology is intimately tied to how we think. The human neocortex is very large. It allow us to think and reason. Therefore, we can take a situation and dwell on it. When we do this, it becomes part of our physiology and initiates the stress cycle leading to inflammation and over-all feelings of physical dysfunction. The flip side of this is the ability to change how we think and alter our physiology in a positive direction.

What many of us may not realize is that emotions are a reaction to how we think. Not the other way around. In reading a book by Bob George titled, “Living Above Your Circumstances,” I learned that you can choose how to react to a situation.  He gives an example of a woman who was left by her high school sweetheart after they were engaged. She spent 20 years after her heart break in and out of institutions and with various medications to “control her emotions.” She was told that her life would be better if she could control her emotions. The doctors chose to do this with dangerous medications.  However, the root cause of her problem was her belief that her only chance at love and happiness had left her and that her life could only be better if she married this man.

Well, Bob helped her address the root cause of her feelings and she made a recovery. And she did it without medication and over a long period of time. But what a concept: covering up symptoms of a problem will not fix the cause.

Unfortunately, this thought pattern is exactly the message that modern medicine has conveyed as “health care.”  When in actuality, we do not have a mainstream system that actually helps us get healthy.  Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease. That is coming straight from the World Health Organization!

So how can you break the cycle of reactionary medicine?  Here are a few simple steps:

  • Learn to breath:  10 deep breaths will reset our stress response. It helps clear our minds of all thoughts (both positive & negative), so you can refocus your attention on rational thoughts instead of reacting to the emotions that are symptomatic of a poor thought pattern.
  • Learn to live above your circumstances. Circumstances are temporary. They do not define us and they should not dictate our emotions.  Whether you have been a victim of a crime or you have a terrible life threatening disease, don’t allow yourself to ask “what did I do to deserve this?” or “Why me?” These questions only lead to negative emotions. It’s ok to experience grief, worry and fear, but try not to dwell on them. Try to surround yourself with people who love you. Think about maximizing your time and energy and focus on enjoying your life. Because the reality is that any of us could die at any moment. Every moment we are alive is a gift.
  • Manage mechanical pain and inflammation: if you are in pain, your health is adversely affected. Pain also initiates the stress response and makes us susceptible to negative thought patterns.  Much of this pain originates in the spine.  Your doctor of chiropractic is trained to find these patterns and correct them.
  • Manage chemical pain and inflammation: Hidden food allergies & environmental toxins also initiate inflammation and pain. Knowledge of your environmental toxins is key. Know you work environment. Monitor your air quality. Drink water from reverse osmosis filters. Eliminate the sensitive 7 foods: dairy, wheat, sugar, corn, soy, eggs & peanuts.  Most holistic doctors utilize some sort of program for detoxification. Talk to your doctor about whole body detoxification and see if it might be right for you.

In  closing, the triune of health is physical, chemical and emotional well-being.  Upward Living Chiropractic Wellness seeks to nurture health by addressing these issues. Living Upward – Never Look Back & Never Give Up Hope.

My personal belief is that it is a great crime to take away hope. No matter how dire the situation seems to be. We should be realistic about he seriousness of a situation, but we should never take hope away from a patient. It is often times the only thing they have left after a dire diagnosis.  Check out this article published in the Sarcoma journal in 2008.

This article sites “spontaneous remission” of angiosarcoma of the breast with lung metastasis. It also sites references reporting spontaneous remission of osteosarcoma with lung metastasis and endometrial stromal sarcoma.

Let’s talk a little bit about how spontaneous remission is defined in medical literature. Spontaneous remission DOES NOT mean that the patient did not undergo treatment. The article defines Spontaneous regression (SR) of cancer as “a partial or complete disappearance of a malignant tumour in the absence of medical treatment or in the presence of treatment which is considered to be inadequate to produce a significant influence on tumour regression.”

Rather than focus on the negative aspects of how these semantics can mislead the general public, let’s focus on the positive.  There are many people every day who choose to treat their various diseases conservatively. Does it always work? No, of course not. But there is an underlying philosophy of health that is beautifully articulated by an alternative cancer treatment doctor in Mesa, AZ named Dr. Lodi. He is a medical doctor who has chosen to approach health in a much different way than he was taught in medical school.  Listen for yourself:

At Upward Living Chiropractic Wellness, we promote the off-label benefits of chiropractic care. Your Upward Living doctor will truly care for you as an individual.  When this happens, the effects of the chiropractic adjustment are as far-reaching as the powers that hold together the fabric of the universe.  That is because the same powers that maintain matter in existence are also responsible for the human body’s regenerative processes. That regenerative process is mediated by the nervous system. The primary intention of the Upward Living doctor is to measure, track & restore the higher level functioning of the nervous system.  When approached from this philosophy, chiropractic care suddenly becomes a necessary part of any health care regimen, instead of a simple therapy for back and neck pain.

However, we do take your pain very seriously because we know that your pain is intimately tied to your health. This signal is often pointing to a different problem.  We take the time to figure out where your pain is coming from and we nurture you toward health.  That is the true nature of healthcare.  That is what you can expect at Upward Living Chiropractic Wellness.

Largest Pharmaceutical Settlement in History.

I am continually baffled by these class action lawsuits that hit the news shelf every few years, but go seemingly unnoticed. This most resent settlement (the largest in history) is for off-label uses of many drugs resulting in Hawaiian vacations, lavish benefits, etc. for doctors prescribing the medications.

Paxil was sited in this broadcast as being pushed as an anti-depressant for children despite the fact that it was never approved to do so! Yet, doctors can legally prescribe it AND it gets reimbursed by insurance companies! In fact, the very first line of the Paxil listing on the PubMed Health website (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001037/) states:

“Warning: A small number of children, teenagers, and young adults (up to 24 years of age) who took antidepressants (‘mood elevators’) such as paroxetine during clinical studies became suicidal (thinking about harming or killing oneself or planning or trying to do so). Children, teenagers, and young adults who take antidepressants to treat depression or other mental illnesses may be more likely to become suicidal than children, teenagers, and young adults who do not take antidepressants to treat these conditions.”

Glaxo achieved net profits of $8 billion dollars last year. The reporter highlighted that this settlement, although it is a large number was simply “the cost of doing business.”

Are we to sit back and accept this sort of blatant manipulation and malpractice? Where can you turn when you feel that you can no longer trust the western medical system?

Perhaps it’s time that we start getting more bold in our statements concerning the “off-label” benefits of chiropractic care. Sure, chiropractic is an excellent way to alleviate tight muscles, back and neck pain, but I would also like to direct you to a listing of actual case studies showing how chiropractic care has helped with a number of conditions including, but not limited to:

Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Asthma, ADD/ADHD, Autism, Blindness, Cerebral Palsy, Crohn’s disease, Colic, Epilepsy, Fibromyalgia … the list goes on and on. (http://www.chiro.org/research/ABSTRACTS/Conditions.shtml)

The best part is that chiropractic is among the safest interventions in the history of healthcare.

So, if chiropractic care can be the difference between a medicated child committing suicide and a healthy happy child, then I have to ask:

What’s stopping you from trying chiropractic care for your family?

Chiropractic Basics Part 1

Chiropractic is a healing art based on the premise that human beings are self-healing and self-regulating organisms; and the nervous system is the master control system which controls and coordinates every function associated with life. This includes wound healing, digestion, immunity, hormone balance and many other complex functions associated with adapting to environmental stress.

The nervous system is like an interstate. The cars and trucks on the interstate are carrying signals from the brain and going to the organs and tissues. When the interstate is properly maintained, then the traffic can flow freely. When it is in poor repair, the signals get distorted or lost.

When the signals from the brain are interrupted, the organs and muscles become dysfunctional. This can lead to pain and, if left uncorrected, symptoms of organic dysfunction.

Dr. Lucas is trained to detect and correct the cause of nervous system interruption.

Your spine consists of 24 moveable vertebra directly connected to your skull and pelvis. Your spine and skull encases your Central Nervous System or CNS for short.

Your CNS is the master system that controls and regulates every function in your body. It is like the central processor of a computer. It receives and interprets signals from the environment and takes appropriate measures to deal with any environmental stresses. This includes wound healing, production of cells which kill disease causing micro-organisms, and regeneration of vital organ tissues.

The CNS communicates with the rest of the body via the spinal nerves. These nerves are like the wires on a computer that go to the monitor, keyboard and printer. Like a computer, these wires must be protected.

Your spine and skull are the main structures that are responsible for protecting the CNS. However, the spine must allow for the delicate wires to exit the CNS so they can transmit vital information to the structures of the body while also allowing for all the motions that enable us to live our daily lives.

These wires exit the CNS between small holes formed by two adjacent vertebra called an Inter-Vertebral Foramen, or “IVF” for short.

Each vertebra forms a complex joint with the vertebra above and below called a Functional Spinal Unit or “FSU” for short.

The functional spinal unit consists of 2 adjacent vertebra, the inter vertebral disc and the nerves exiting the foramen

When an injury to the joint takes place, a joint sprain creates what chiropractors call a “subluxation”. A subluxation is a joint injury that can me measured in terms of swelling, heat, asymmetry, loss of range of motion, and pain or “SHARP” for short. When this happens, a complex of compensation and symptoms develop called “Vertebral Subluxation Complex” or “VSC” for short.

An injury to the joint of the FSU can lead to instability of the joints above and below the primary injury. In an effort to protect the nervous system, the joints above and below will remodel to being stability to the spine. This remodeling is usually diagnosed as osteo-arthritis or degenerative joint disease. This is called the subluxation-degeneration model of vertebral subluxation complex.

As you can see, a subluxation can affect other vertebra anywhere in the spine. This is because your spine functions as a unit. Each FSU is dependent on the others for stability and motion. Other joints must compensate to stabilize subluxated vertebra in order to protect the nerves.

Your body’s main priority is to stay alive. It will place more value on protecting the nerves than protecting the joints. Eventually, FSUs will fuse in a final effort to maintain the integrity of the Nerve system.

Subluxation/degeneration model of vertebral subluxation complex.

The organs affected will be directly related to the location of the subluxation and the degree of degeneration.

Subluxations can cause stress which leads to lowered immunity and any number of symptoms of organic diseases commonly diagnosed in your medical doctor’s office.

At Upward Living Chiropractic Wellness, subluxations are corrected before they degenerate.

Lets compare the Dr. Lucas’s role to the role of your dentist.

In your dentist’s office, you are checked for cavities before your teeth degenerate and cause severe decay. He or she is a specialist in the detection and correction of cavities. If you do not care for your teeth regularly, more invasive and dangerous procedures must be used to prevent tooth loss or life threatening infections.

Similarly, Dr. Lucas will provide care to help slow or stop the process of subluxation degeneration which will eventually require the more dangerous and invasive procedures obtained from your medical doctor. These procedures are, at times, life-saving and necessary, but should be avoided if possible.

Dr. Lucas provides specific, individualized care for those who want more out of life. Regular spinal check-ups will help you live a stronger and more vibrant life.
