Chiropractic Basics Part 1

Chiropractic is a healing art based on the premise that human beings are self-healing and self-regulating organisms; and the nervous system is the master control system which controls and coordinates every function associated with life. This includes wound healing, digestion, immunity, hormone balance and many other complex functions associated with adapting to environmental stress.

The nervous system is like an interstate. The cars and trucks on the interstate are carrying signals from the brain and going to the organs and tissues. When the interstate is properly maintained, then the traffic can flow freely. When it is in poor repair, the signals get distorted or lost.

When the signals from the brain are interrupted, the organs and muscles become dysfunctional. This can lead to pain and, if left uncorrected, symptoms of organic dysfunction.

Dr. Lucas is trained to detect and correct the cause of nervous system interruption.

Your spine consists of 24 moveable vertebra directly connected to your skull and pelvis. Your spine and skull encases your Central Nervous System or CNS for short.

Your CNS is the master system that controls and regulates every function in your body. It is like the central processor of a computer. It receives and interprets signals from the environment and takes appropriate measures to deal with any environmental stresses. This includes wound healing, production of cells which kill disease causing micro-organisms, and regeneration of vital organ tissues.

The CNS communicates with the rest of the body via the spinal nerves. These nerves are like the wires on a computer that go to the monitor, keyboard and printer. Like a computer, these wires must be protected.

Your spine and skull are the main structures that are responsible for protecting the CNS. However, the spine must allow for the delicate wires to exit the CNS so they can transmit vital information to the structures of the body while also allowing for all the motions that enable us to live our daily lives.

These wires exit the CNS between small holes formed by two adjacent vertebra called an Inter-Vertebral Foramen, or “IVF” for short.

Each vertebra forms a complex joint with the vertebra above and below called a Functional Spinal Unit or “FSU” for short.

The functional spinal unit consists of 2 adjacent vertebra, the inter vertebral disc and the nerves exiting the foramen

When an injury to the joint takes place, a joint sprain creates what chiropractors call a “subluxation”. A subluxation is a joint injury that can me measured in terms of swelling, heat, asymmetry, loss of range of motion, and pain or “SHARP” for short. When this happens, a complex of compensation and symptoms develop called “Vertebral Subluxation Complex” or “VSC” for short.

An injury to the joint of the FSU can lead to instability of the joints above and below the primary injury. In an effort to protect the nervous system, the joints above and below will remodel to being stability to the spine. This remodeling is usually diagnosed as osteo-arthritis or degenerative joint disease. This is called the subluxation-degeneration model of vertebral subluxation complex.

As you can see, a subluxation can affect other vertebra anywhere in the spine. This is because your spine functions as a unit. Each FSU is dependent on the others for stability and motion. Other joints must compensate to stabilize subluxated vertebra in order to protect the nerves.

Your body’s main priority is to stay alive. It will place more value on protecting the nerves than protecting the joints. Eventually, FSUs will fuse in a final effort to maintain the integrity of the Nerve system.

Subluxation/degeneration model of vertebral subluxation complex.

The organs affected will be directly related to the location of the subluxation and the degree of degeneration.

Subluxations can cause stress which leads to lowered immunity and any number of symptoms of organic diseases commonly diagnosed in your medical doctor’s office.

At Upward Living Chiropractic Wellness, subluxations are corrected before they degenerate.

Lets compare the Dr. Lucas’s role to the role of your dentist.

In your dentist’s office, you are checked for cavities before your teeth degenerate and cause severe decay. He or she is a specialist in the detection and correction of cavities. If you do not care for your teeth regularly, more invasive and dangerous procedures must be used to prevent tooth loss or life threatening infections.

Similarly, Dr. Lucas will provide care to help slow or stop the process of subluxation degeneration which will eventually require the more dangerous and invasive procedures obtained from your medical doctor. These procedures are, at times, life-saving and necessary, but should be avoided if possible.

Dr. Lucas provides specific, individualized care for those who want more out of life. Regular spinal check-ups will help you live a stronger and more vibrant life.
